The Guru Who Was Proven Wrong.
Apr 04, 2024A few years back, there was a popular guru who used to run ads proclaiming:
"webinars are the secret to getting clients!"
Recently, this very same guru ran an ad that said:
"All the gurus will say that you need one thing to succeed, but that's not true.
There is no more "one thing" anymore...
Business success requires a lot of different things..."
While I appreciate his newfound honesty, I would modify his newest statement a bit:
There never was just "one thing" that could make you successful.
Success in any business — online or offline — requires the same fundamentals.
Don't let someone tell you that their thing is "all you need", especially if you're new (and you need everything!).
Let's take a quick tour through ALL the puzzle pieces required for success with your online business...
(There are SIX)
That way you'll know what they are — and can diagnose what you're missing:
1 — A business must answer two foundational questions:
Who do I serve, and what problem do I solve?
Without clear answers to both of those, you can't move on.
They literally color in everything else you do.
2 — A business must have an offer, that is a way to solve the problem for the person, positioned in a way that is desirable.
There's a lot of psychology that goes into proper offer creation.
This alone is worth hiring a coach for, to make sure you get it right.
"My offer is an online course"
That's not an offer, that's just the way the offer is delivered.
3 — A business must generate leads.
I'll be honest, this is my biggest area for improvement. I haven't cracked the code on organic social media or paid ads yet.
I know that if I could double my lead flow, I would double my business.
Without any leads, you've essentially got a lemonade stand in your basement.
Not one soul has the slightest clue that you have something for sale.
4 — A business must master sales.
This is another area I'm not the strongest in. Luckily, I have books that warm my prospects up.
People who read books say YES on sales calls 300-400% more often than people who watch a webinar or consume some content.
So, I have a "handicap" if you will.
But, if you haven't a clue how to uncover the value of what you do properly in a 1:1 or group setting, you'll choke out your business by getting very few sales.
5 — A business must master follow up.
Most people who join your email list aren't ready to buy your offer yet.
Studies done by Google have shown that people need to spend around 8 hours with a brand before they build enough trust to make a purchasing decision.
It's crucial to continue to add value to the folks who are giving you their attention by joining your email list or following you online.
Many of them will become customers one day.
And finally...
6 — A business must have a way to demonstrate value up front.
How many times have you handed over hundreds or thousands of dollars when you didn't trust a person (or company) to deliver you a result?
I know that everytime I've paid up, it started with me testing the waters.
I read their book.
I watched a ton of their YouTube videos.
I read a lot of their emails.
I made sure they knew their stuff.
I can't be fooled, and neither can you.
Humans are great at sniffing out B.S.
We try before we buy.
That's the real value of the webinar that the guru spoke about.
That's the real point of using a book to get clients.
You gotta give the people free (and cheap) ways of testing the waters with you.
Nobody is just going to hand over thousands of dollars without it.
So now, if I were to say:
"All you need is to write a book to get clients!"
I would be lying.
It's just one of SIX puzzle pieces.
It's not true — except in the instance where the person already has the other 5 pieces sorted out to a degree.
Not all of them need to be perfect.
But, you can't be severely lacking in any of them — or you'll have an issue.
I hope this has helped you see the "puzzle pieces" more clearly.
If you feel like it's the right time to add in a mechanism that demonstrates your value, that's exactly what I teach in my program Get Clients With a Book.
Here's what you get:
- A 148-page book (digital and audio versions) that acts as the blueprint for writing a book in a precise way to bring in clients
- A Client-Getting Book Template (built in Google Docs) that contains prebuilt chapters and prompts to write your book faster
- My Book Cover Canva Template - so you can just change out the words and pictures and have a book cover (instead of spending $500 to get a new one made)
- Kindle Simplicity - a digital course that walks you through how to publish your book on Amazon, for free, so you can create additional revenue, get the authority of being a published author, and generate more clients from your book.
You get all of this for less than I paid for my oatmilk latte yesterday, right here:
Here's to you installing a book in your business, so that you lock in yet another puzzle piece...
On your way to massive growth.
